Summer Slow Down in Washington? I don't think so!

Well, what a week. The presidential campaign is in full swing and the pollsters are hopping. If I were to handicap the race over this past week or so, I would have to say that last week was a slightly better week for Senator John McCain. The Arizona Republican seems to have done better at setting the agenda over the past two weeks.

NYU Hospitality Conference: Where business and government in

This past week I attended the 30th annual NYU Hospitality Conference in NY. On Sunday, we met with members of our Governmental Affairs/HotelPAC committee. As we engaged in a lively and well informed debate of our issues, it occurred to me how much more the committee is engaged in governmental affairs issues. Both Steve Porter, president, the Americas of InterContinental Hotels Group, and Bob Alter, executive chairman of Sunstone Hotel Investors, our two most recent chairs, have raised the expectations of committee members.

Legislation and Regulations on the Move

I received good news this week concerning the success on one of our priority issues from last month's Legislative Action Summit. The Travel and Tourism Promotion Act has gained a number of co-sponsors in the House and a few more on the Senate legislation. I attribute this success directly to the successful lobbying by AH&LA members during the LAS.

Meetings? We love meetings!

A governmental affairs representative in Washington has to be prepared to attend meetings. I attend lots of meetings. They may be pre-event meetings or post-event wrap-up meetings, issue meetings, image meetings, planning meetings. I've participated in a number of recent meetings that have been helpful in furthering the interests of the lodging industry.

blog watch

Effectively monitoring how your property or product is viewed by the public in a new era when everyone seems to be a journalist is essential to stay on top of your game. AH&LA recommends the following websites to monitor online comment of your brand, and keep an eye on general topics and trends in the online community:

Blogpulse provides insight into the people, issues, blogs, posts, commentaries, tidbits and news that bloggers are discussing. Blog pulse allows you to:

  • Search trends: Create customized comparisons of the most popular blog buzz words that apply to your business
  • Track conversations: Follow the trail of a story between bloggers
  • Review profiles: Take a more in-depth look at blog sites and authors

Fast Fact from Blogpulse:
Blogpulse's Trends feature automatically surveys blogs from around the world and identifies trends of the most blogged-about terms, answering the question, "What's the buzz?" On April 30, in the 'Business' sub-category of 'Energy Sources,' key terms searched were Gas vs. Hybrid vs. Nuclear vs. Solar vs. Wind.

Google Trends allows you to see the frequency that specific words have been 'googled' since this popular search engine was created in 2004. Google Trends' results will compare terms against each other, allow you to search regions, and provide links to recent news stories the terms were searched in.

Fast fact from Google Trends:
The term "Earth Day" of course reached peaks of searches on April 22 consistently for the past few years. Using Google Trends' regional searches, it's evident that this term was searched for most often by web users in New Jersey, Wisconsin, the District of Columbia, and Minnesota.
